My Anti-Bucket List

By Robin Fisher Roffer

Everyone is talking about what’s on his or her bucket list. I’m making one that declares what I NEVER want to do again before I die.

1. Hold on to mediocre employees and hope they’ll improve

2. Work with a known misogynist

3. Eat wasabi and think it’s avocado

4. Take on a client without a signed contract

5. Stay in relationship with a client that threatens to fire me (next time I’ll let them)

6. Fly coach to the Middle East

7. Use divisive language to shake things up and create change (come to think of it, maybe “train wreck” wasn’t the right word choice)

8. Take on too many clients at the same time

9. Complain about having too many clients at the same time

10. Ski

11. Volunteer to chair a school gala

12. Treat employees like family — I’ve got one

13. Drink a cocktail in Costa Rica containing ice

14. Work with a client who is having an affair with her boss who happens to be my friend’s husband

15. Wear stilettos to a lawn party

16. Work my assistant so hard that she passes out

17. Forget to lock my doors at night

18. Let someone finish the sentence, “I’m saying this as a friend…”

19. Trying to grow broccoli in New Mexico

20. Not believing in myself

Before you think about all the places you want to go and all the things you want to do before you kick the bucket, first decide what you will never do again. Life’s just too short to repeat what doesn’t work for you.

So what’s on your anti-bucket list?

That's a great post. Anti bucket lists 1. Work overnights. Nothing wrecks my month like having to do a 10 hour Marathon. 2. Pay too much for a bad haircut.

Great idea! I love your list. I totally agree with ski, but would also add bungee jump, and sky dive. I think I will continue my anti-bucket list on a separate sheet of paper.

Robin~ I am going to intend that you and I have the pleasure of getting to know each oher as friends one day...because you are so cool! I love your anti-bucket list! Having a bucket list is like a guiding light to where we want to go...but an anti-bucket list is what keeps us kosher when the stars blind our vision. Thanks Robin...now I am off to write my own. As always I remain...Joy

Robin, I was so inspired by your post that I wrote my own. I've Tweeted the link to you.

Love your list! While I agree with most, the one closest to my heart is the first. In my group we are dealing with quite some legacy issues, where the trial period has not been used properly. To avoid this in the future, is on the forefront of our minds all the time now. No surprise but it works!!

I appreciate the post. Got me thinking about my own anti-bucket list. But perhaps the most important part you said was at the end, "Life’s just too short to repeat what doesn’t work for you." Worth repeating. Too many are in the habit of "repeating yesterday" because that's all they know and are perhaps, too afraid to try something new.

I totally agree with you! People repeat bad habits because it's comfortable to do so. Comfort is like a blinking yellow light we drive right though!
